ESD 112 taps experienced educator to head regional math and science efforts
Mark Lewis has been named Director of the Science and Math Education Resource Center (SMERC), a partnership between regional school districts, Educational Service District 112, Washington State University Vancouver, and Hewlett Packard. Lewis joins long-time director Anne Kennedy who has accepted additional responsibilities as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Director. She will work closely with Lewis in her new role to continue to enhance math and science education throughout the region and state.
Lewis will manage a wide variety of projects in science and mathematics including a number of school-university partnerships, development of a regional mathematics initiative, and expansion of the highly successful science education cooperative. Additionally, he will support efforts to align resources and expertise among school districts, higher education institutions, and private and public partners.
Lewis is formerly Director of Planning and Development for University of the South Pacific in Fiji. There, he managed a regional university serving more than 22,000 students in 12 developing countries. He also spent three years as a director in the Peace Corps in Fiji, where he managed administrative operations for a start up post. He took the program from zero to 52 volunteers in just 14 months and ultimately managed more than 80 staff and volunteers. Altogether, he spent 12 years in the Peace Corps, including two as deputy director for Jordan and Turkmenistan. Lewis has also taught math and science for the Northshore School District in Bothell, WA. Prior to beginning his teacher career, Lewis worked as a technical manager and orbit analyst for Hughes Space and Communications Group where he was responsible for satellite modeling, testing, and analysis. He has more than 23 years of professional experience and holds a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Washington University.
"Mark brings a wealth of experience in working with diverse communities," said Kennedy. "I am particularly pleased with the experience he has building bridges across different organizations and businesses by finding shared values and establishing priorities toward a common mission," she added.
Mike Stromme, ESD 112 Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Technology, said he was impressed with Lewis' proven ability to broaden networks and to develop and lead innovative programs for teachers and students. "He will be a great asset to our team," said Stromme.
Lewis will officially begin his new duties in early August.
