Prevention project takes a new look at ordinary surroundings

When Starla Braga, ESD 112 Prevention/Intervention specialist for Kalama High School, got the idea to paint ceiling tiles with anti-drug messages, she had no idea how the idea would take off. With the support of staff (especially art teacher Sara Storer) and administration, the concept of using “boring” ceiling tiles as a canvas for art and prevention messages has spread throughout the school with more and more students creating new works of art daily. Students are gathering in Braga’s classroom to share their ideas and feelings with one another and on the tiles. “It’s really helped spread the message of prevention throughout the school,” said Braga. The completed tiles are back on the ceiling for all to enjoy. Students and staff voted on their favorites and prizes will be awarded at a school assembly.
