ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program to recruit and place 190 youth in jobs this summer
The ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program has been selected by the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council to recruit 190 income eligible youth, ages 14-24, and place them in jobs this summer. Youth will earn more than $1,500 during the six week period working in area non-profits and government agencies in Clark and Cowlitz counties. The funding for the program is part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (federal stimulus) funds.
Available jobs for youth include opportunities ranging from facilities and maintenance, landscaping, construction, office and clerical positions and technology-related tasks. In addition to working three, eight hour days a week, the youth will also attend one day of work readiness training that provides them with skills needed to become skilled employees. In all, they will work, and be paid, for 30 hours a week at minimum wage ($8.55/hour) from July 7-August 14.
There are 150 openings in Clark County and 40 in Cowlitz County. Positions are available in major communities including throughout Vancouver and Battle Ground, as well as Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock. In addition, another 15 construction-related positions are available in conjunction with Lower Columbia Action Council’s self-help housing program. Youth can contact ESD 112 directly for more information: in Clark County – 360/750-7500, ext. 290, and in Cowlitz County – 360-575-7889, or on the web at www.esd112.org/ywp.
“We are pleased that our area employers are also stepping up to provide meaningful work experiences for our youth. There are 30 local non-profits and government agencies providing training and mentoring for the 190 youth,” said ESD 112 Superintendent Dr. Twyla Barnes.
The ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program also has continues to provide year around career development, job readiness and academic support programs for more than 400 youth ages 16-21 in Clark, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties through a federal Workforce Investment Act contract from the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council.
