Kurt Reeser, Washington Reading Corps (WRC) supervisor arranged some exciting opportunities for students and members of the WRC to share their day with a few of our elected officials.
Representative Bill Fromhold (D. 49th District) visited Vancouver’s Minnehaha Elementary, Representative Ed Orcutt (R. 18th District) spent a day at Toutle Lake Elementary and Senator Craig Pridemore (D. 49th District) spoke at Martin Luther King Elementary in Vancouver. These politicians took time from their busy schedules to meet with our WRC members, speak to the students about legislative process and even help tutor students in reading.
“We felt it was very important for them to see our tutoring groups in action because tutoring students in reading is the heart of our program,” said Reeser.
The visit provided a great opportunity for the state officials to experience the WRC program first-hand. They listened to many success stories that AmeriCorps members have experienced throughout southwest Washington and across the state. Together they discussed their reading programs and the importance of civic engagement.
“The senator and representatives appeared very grateful for the experience. We are very proud of our Washington Reading Corps programs and are delighted that they took the time to visit us,” said Reeser.
