In the Eyes of the Beholder: Visual Literacy in the Digital Age

Presented at NCCE 2005 in Seattle, WA and NCCE 2006 in Portland, OR.
Presenter: Debbie Tschirgi, Director of Educational Technology Programs, ESD 112

The world we live in is a highly visual one, and electronic media is bombarding us with information. As both consumers and producers of information, our students will need to be skilled at using visual images for effective communication, problem-solving and decision-making. This presentation explores the meaning of visual literacy and touches on the research, and then defines four key principles for laying out visual multimedia elements in your Word and PowerPoint documents.

Learning to DeJunk Your Design Layouts

Presented by Debbie Tschirgi
Educational Technology Director, ESD 112

With computers, we have the capability to design documents by using text, borders and graphics. However, the misuse of these elements can lead to the creation of documents that are difficult and/or confusing to read. Learn to use four design principles to DEJUNK your pages and create professional-looking flyers, brochures, invitations and more!

Learning to Use the Washington Query System Software

Presented by Debbie Tschirgi
Educational Technology Director, ESD 112

Every district in the state of Washington has now received the Washington Query System software. This database contains information about the students in your district and their level of achievement on the WASLs. It also contains student data as it relates to the ITBS and ITED tests. This data can be sorted, printed, exported and customized.

While the database is a powerful tool to help analyze the student learning that is taking place in your district, the real power of it lies in its ability to mobilize necessary changes that will ensure that all students meet the learning standards. By looking at the ways in which the different measures are inter-related, teachers and administrators can learn to ask the important questions that will lead to further investigations of learning that is taking place in their schools.
