Each year, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History partners with ESD 112 to provide an exciting professional development opportunity “on location” at a nationally significant historical site.  The 2009 program brought teachers to Birmingham, Alabama, to study the Civil Rights Movement with historian Glenn Eskew (Georgia State University) and classroom specialist Martha Bouyer.  The week brought participants into deep engagement with the theme through lectures, discussions, lessons, oral histories, and visits to monuments and historic sites.  The cumulative effect was intellectually and emotionally provocative:  an unforgettable experience for all involved.  Much of the trip is summarized on the program blog with photos and links:
