Overview

Dr. Bob Marzano is working with Washington State ESDs for the next three years on "Getting Serious About School Reform." This long term professional development opportunity will be centered around Marzano's three critical commitments and how they affect every classroom student.

Robert J. Marzano is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. Throughout his 40 years in the field of education, he has become a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include Designing & Teaching Learning Goals & Objectives, District Leadership That Works, Designing & Assessing Educational Objectives, Making Standards Useful in the Classroom, and The Art and Science of Teaching. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.

Commitment 2: Ensure Effective Teaching in Every Classroom

In his foundational book, "The Art and Science of Teaching", Dr. Marzano highlights well-researched practices educators use to be truly effective and realize gains in student achievement.  Learn which strategies made the most difference in the classroom and how to use them. Gain insights on incorporating quality classroom practices from the perspectives of teacher and leader.

Materials presented in the December 9 & 10, 2010 conference in Vancouver, Washington are included below.

Commitment 1

Develop a System of Individual Student Feedback at the District, School and Classroom Levels

ESD/Marzano Standards-Based Mathematics and Science Rubrics

The purpose of this project was to design a comprehensive assessment system for mathematics and science standards that will: 1) focus instruction across a school and/or a district on specific areas of knowledge and skill; and 2) provide a vehicle for teachers and/or other school staff to keep track of the progress of individual students on each topic using teacer-designed formal and informal assessments.

Commitment 3

Build Background Knowledge for All Students

  1. Build an academic vocabulary.
  2. Build a basic vocabulary for English Language Learners and students from poverty to achieve literacy.
  3. Encourage reading across various content areas and genres.

Everyone knows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are not well prepared for school have the toughest time making the grade.  What hasn't been so clear is what schools can do about it.  Simply using a strategy does not guarantee positive results.  Rather, it's how someone uses the strategy that determines whether it produces great results, mediocre results, or no results at all.  Research shows that when teachers, schools and districts take a systematic approach to helping students identify and master the essential vocabulary and concepts of a given subject area, student comprehension and achievement rises.
