ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program places 190 youth in summer jobs
Nearly 200 Clark and Cowlitz County youth have been placed in summer jobs through ESD 112's Youth Workforce Program. More than 30 employers in Clark County and 10 in Cowlitz County offered openings for youth in areas ranging from facilities and maintenance, landscaping, construction, office and clerical positions and technology-related tasks.
Youth will work three, eight hour days a week and will attend one day of work readiness training that provides them with skills needed to become skilled employees. In all, they will work, and be paid, for 30 hours a week at minimum wage ($8.55/hour) from July 7-August 14. The funding for the program is part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (federal stimulus) funds, which are administered by the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council.
“We are pleased that our area employers are also stepping up to provide meaningful work experiences for our youth. There are 30 local non-profits and government agencies providing training and mentoring for the 190 youth,” said ESD 112 Superintendent Dr. Twyla Barnes.
The ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program also has continues to provide year-round career development, job readiness and academic support programs for more than 400 youth ages 16-21 in Clark, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties through a federal Workforce Investment Act contract from the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council.
