Students, press and education officials from Taiwan visit Evergreen School District
A group of 45 elementary and middle school-aged students and their chaperones from Taiwan will visit Riverview and Illahee Elementary and Pacific and Shahala Middle Schools January 23 through February 3. In addition, members of the Taiwanese press and education representatives from Nantou County Schools visited the district January 23-29.
The students are here to get a first-hand look at an American education system. They will take English lessons taught by retired teachers and spend a portion of each day visiting various classrooms and working on projects with their American counterparts. After classes, each school will host a "Chinese Culture Camp" involving the students from Taiwan and those from the host schools who are interested in participating. The Taiwanese students will lead the camps, teaching Evergreen students such skills as fan dancing, martial arts, and traditional Chinese crafts.
The weekend of February 4-5, the young Taiwanese visitors will stay with volunteer host families from the Evergreen Public Schools community.
During the weekends, all of the Taiwanese guests will explore local sites, such as downtown Portland and Vancouver, the Columbia River Gorge, and Mount Hood.
All expenses for the students' trip are provided by the student's family and the King Car Education Foundation located in Taipei, Taiwan.
