Career Academies build student skills and houses

Over the summer, eight students from Educational Service District 112's Youth Workforce Construction Academy helped complete two Habitat for Humanity homes in north Kelso. The Construction Academy is one of several opportunities that provides a summer job and hands-on supervised training for students, not only in construction, but also in other career fields such as health care, business and forest products. The houses were partially completed when the students started work at the beginning of the summer, but under the direction of Ken Steeley, the Habitat supervisor, the students are doing much of the final work.

(Pictured) Mark Morris High School students Matt Meadows, 17, a senior this fall, and Mandy Gibson, 16, a junior, install a "clean out" at one of the two houses. The Construction Academy also receives support from the Oregon Building Congress/Associated General Contractors and operates with funds provided by the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council.
