Graduation Alternative Program (GAP)
About the Graduation Alternative Program
The Educational Service District 112 Graduation Alternative Program (GAP) provides students with the opportunity to enhance personal skills in a variety of academic areas to successfully pass the GED test. ESD 112 works in partnership with local school districts in the Southwest Washington area to provide a comprehensive GED preparation course that meets the needs of out-of-school youth or non-traditional learners ages 16 to 21.
The Clark County classrooms serve youth at two locations in Vancouver: ESD 112 and the Clark County Juvenile Justice Center. Cowlitz County has one location in Longview. Morning and afternoon classes are available at all locations.
Students in the GAP Program receive group and individual instruction specifically focused on passing the GED test. Using an integrated approach, students master academic curriculum in the areas of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Students also have access to the NovaNet system, allowing for individualized practice and assessment of skills. Along with academic instruction, students prepare for the post-graduation job market by creating a career portfolio.
GAP students attend class and receive instruction fifteen hours per week and work independently at home ten hours per week, Monday through Friday. To ensure success and to meet minimum educational hours, students keep a daily work log to document study.
The classrooms at ESD 112 in both Vancouver and Longview are co-located with the ESD 112 Youth Workforce Program, allowing students greater access to additional academic and career support.
