Math Performance Assessment Tasks
The Math Performance Assessment Tasks Program has provided the opportunity for small districts in the ESD 112 region to combine their efforts and funds to enhance their mathematics programs. During the 1998/99 school year, Greg Hall, an assessment expert from Alberta, Canada, trained approximately 30 teachers in the writing and scoring of quality mathematics performance assessments. In teams, those teachers wrote and piloted several tasks for each of their specific grades.
In order to improve students performance on the WASLs, teachers and students need to become proficient in mathematics performance assessments at each grade level.

What Is Performance Assessment?
Performance assessments are designed to require students effectively and thoughtfully to construct solutions to questions, problems or tasks. These tasks frequestly involve manipulatives and are scored using a rubric. The performance assessments developed by the Mathematics Assessment Project will support classroom instruction and will help improve student learning.
