Emergency Supply Kits
Under the requirements for Senate Bill 5097, the landmark legislation passed in 2007 regarding School Safety, the subject of Emergency Supplies in schools and classrooms was addressed. While the OSPI is considering what should be included in a "supply list," The Safe Schools Healthy Students grant provided the schools in Cowlitz County a boost by including this in the funding package. Using the good efforts of the Cowlitz Safe Schools Coalition, representatives of schools and first responder agencies collaborated on what supplies would be the best fit for Cowlitz County schools. Reviewing a variety of options and examples, a proposal was submitted that included no products with a shelf life (eg. batteries, food or water). Emergency Supply kits will be provided to one-half of the schools in Cowlitz County during the school year 2008-2009. SSHS staff will work with building administrators on any training necessary to ensure school staff is prepared to access and make effective use of this resource.
