Parents as Teachers
Parents are their children’s first and most influential teachers. The first few years of a child’s life are critical and provide the foundation for success in school and in life. They will learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life. Parents help shape their child’s future through the experiences they provide.
Parents as Teachers is a parent education and family support program assisting families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten.
Following are some of the services provided through this support program:
Personal visits: Typically on a monthly basis, a parent educator shares age-appropriate child development information and addresses parenting concerns. Parents learn how to observe their child. Personal visits include fun activities to help children learn and grow.
Screenings: Utilizes the parent-friendly Ages and Stages questionnaire to assess a child’s overall development as well as health, hearing and vision.
Resources: Identify and connect with critical support.
Groups: Connect and learn with other parents.
Certified parent educators translate scientific information on early brain development into specific advice. By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child’s language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.
