SCHOOL SAFETY – PUBLIC HEALTH
|
|
School safety planning is an ongoing, cyclical process
Whether you have already adopted a current plan or are revamping an old plan, establish a team and schedule regular work session meetings. Remember these three tips for safety planning: collaboration is key, the process is more important than the product, and safety is a mindset. Reach out to Corina for training, templates, and additional resources.

New legislation regarding school health & safety
- HB 5647 School safety/temporary employees. Effective June 6, 2024, safe school plans must include how substitute teachers and other temporary employees receive necessary information about safe school plans, including school safety policies and procedure and the three basic functional drill responses.
- SB 5804 Opioid overdose medication in schools. Effective June 6, 2024, all school districts, charter schools, and state-tribal compact schools must obtain and maintain at least one set of opioid overdose reversal medication in each school and adopt an opioid-related overdose policy.
- HB 1230 (2023) Drug Information on School Websites - Department of Health is updating websites and links. Effective July 23, 2024, each school must post a prominent link to DOH (once available) on their homepage with information about substance use trends, overdose symptoms and response, and the secure storage of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and firearms and ammunition.
- HB 1207 (2023) Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying, and Discrimination Prevention in Schools. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, school districts should include OSPI’s model student handbook language in any student, parent, employee, and volunteer handbook published on the school or district’s website.

Free COVID tests going away
The Washington Department of Health closed the free COVID/Flu test portal on May 31. Free test supplies will not be available for the 2024-2025 school year. The ESD will maintain a limited supply of tests for districts experiencing high levels of illness or outbreak. Schools with expired tests and PPE can dispose of per the manufacturer's requirements.

Reminder for Repeat COVID-19 Testing
The FDA recommends repeat testing, also known as serial testing, to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Rapid antigen tests are unlikely to detect the virus in early stages of infection. Thus, the FDA recommends people who are either symptomatic or have had COVID exposure to test every 48 hours.
