Saying Goodbye to Critters in K-5 STEM Kits

ESD 112 STEM Kits will no longer support the use of critters in the K-5 classroom. This change has been expected for the past several years. In March of 2020, our SMC Advisory Committee approved the phasing out of critters in the K-5 classroom and supported the switch to more authentic outdoor STEM.

We hope that you will join us in exploring other opportunities to support our students with high-quality and engaging STEM learning through sense-making of local phenomena and problems. Check out our STEM Storylines that strive to support you in creating rigorous and empowering STEM experiences for our students.

Please check out the Goodbye Critters Info Sheet for more information and replacement activities to support this transition.

STEM Support Trainings

August 17–19

Join us as we reimagine what high-quality STEM learning can look like in K-5 as students learn in a blended or remote space during FALL 2020. This training will support you in creating a STEM Learning Plan for your students that leverages STEM materials and STEM Storylines that are provided by ESD 112. We will model some best practices for facilitating meaningful STEM through a variety of virtual and at-home protocols, activities, and strategies. Teachers will have a chance to work collaboratively with grade-level colleagues who are working with the same STEM materials in the Fall. Join us as we work to create an equitable and engaging STEM experience for our students and their families!

INTEGRATED LEARNING & PBL

Foundational PBL Institute for Continuous Learning 2.0

Three-day course

How can we create an empowering and engaging learning experience for our students while they are learning from home? Join the ESD 112 PBL team as we dive into foundational project-based learning for the virtual learning environment! Participants will learn about the components of PBL and experience how the framework of PBL can create a purposeful and equitable learning space for all students in the virtual classroom. You will use a variety of tools to create a unit that focuses around content standards while leveraging students’ funds of knowledge and interests outside the walls of the classroom. One administrator may attend free for every three teachers who register.
