Did You Know?

Did you know the most common drugs misused by teens & adults come from family & friends’ home medicine cabinets?  75% of opioid misuse starts with using medication that wasn’t prescribed for them. Safely disposing of unwanted & expired medication using a take-back program or event protects loved ones & keeps medicines out of the wrong hands. (Source: Substance Abuse and  Mental Health Service Administration)

Did you know medications not disposed of properly end up in our waterways? Let’s work together to keep these substances away from youth and out of our waterways.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What medications will be accepted? Any prescription and over-the-counter medications including pills, liquids & inhalers will be accepted.
  • What about Sharps & syringes? The Drug Take Back Event site in East Klickitat will NOT accept Sharps or syringes for disposal. Kaiser Permanente Cascade Park & Peacehealth SW Urgent Care event sites will accept Sharps & syringes from noncommercial sources only. These two sites are the only event sites accepting noncommercial Sharps & syringes. Use an approved Sharps container when transporting; if one is not available, use a rigid plastic container with a lid (ex: plastic milk jug) & label the container: WARNING-SHARPS DO NOT RECYCLE
  • What about Epi-pens? Epi-pens that still have medication in them need to be treated as medication and disposed of following the medication disposal guidelines for the year-round disposal sites. Epi-pens that are empty need to be treated as Sharps, but do not need to be put in a Sharps container.
  • Are vape pens & e-cigarettes being accepted? YES! All event sites  in Clark County will be collecting vape pens & e-cigarettes WITHOUT batteries. If batteries aren’t removable, check with large electronic chain stores to ask if they accept vape pens & e-cigarettes for proper disposal or contact your local Hazardous Material Transfer Stations to ask if they accept these devices & for additional guidance on proper disposal.
  • How are medications collected disposed of? All prescription & over-the-counter medication collected at event sites are safely incinerated by the D.E.A.

LOCKS SAVE LIVES – Take the Pledge to Lock Your Meds

Ease of access is the #1 reason youth misuse prescription drugs. YOU can save a life by locking up your prescription medication. It’s easy &  important!

A national study indicated 29% of parents with  children 18 years-of-age  and younger report storing  medication safely in the home-in a latched or locked location. (Pediatrics, 2017)

We can do better. Together, we can achieve 100%.
