Summer Fire Prevention

Summer is known for hot, dry weather, empty school buildings, fireworks, and vacation merriment. Claims history shows that this combination has had severe and damaging effects on district property. As you prepare your buildings for summer vacation, it is important to consider the steps you can take to better protect buildings from fire-related incidents.

Please consider the following questions:

  • Are unused appliances and electrical equipment unplugged/disconnected from power?
  • Do electrical panels and HVAC systems have appropriate clearance of 36 inches?
  • Are decorations and/or artwork removed from light fixtures, sprinkler heads, pipes, vents, or radiators?
  • Has the district verified that sprinkler systems are operational and properly pressurized?
    • Do the sprinkler heads have appropriate 18-inch clearance?
  • Has the district properly disposed of any used grease rags from the kitchen or maintenance?
  • Are kitchen vent hoods properly cleaned to remove grease residue?
  • Are special hazards such as the equipment and materials in welding labs, wood shops, and chemistry labs appropriately stored and controlled?
  • Has the district verified heat tolerance and provided appropriate storage/protection for flammables and combustibles stored outdoors?
  • Has the district verified quantity and types of stored materials in flammable storage cabinets do not exceed the cabinets’ rated capacities?
  • Does the district post signage prior to the Fourth of July holiday, advising that fireworks are not allowed on district property?
  • At the start of summer break, does the district move any dumpsters, trash cans, or portable bathrooms at least 10 feet away from buildings?
    • Are they locked and secured to prevent unauthorized relocation?
  • Does the district have an arson watch program or implement nightly security patrols?
    • If yes, do these programs have specific protocols for holidays or events where fireworks are likely to be ignited?
