Dear Risk Co-Op Member:

July 4th, Independence Day, is fast approaching, as is evident with firework stands popping up in our communities. This is the perfect opportunity to inspect school property for conditions that could pose a fire hazard and result in substantial property damage. Schools have open play areas and sports fields that attract people looking for a place to light fireworks. To discourage the use of school property for fireworks, we recommend our member districts change their reader boards to read: "Fireworks are prohibited on school property." Prohibiting fireworks on campus can substantially reduce the potential of fire.

To help prevent fires on school properties, Risk Co-Op recommends:
  1. Remove or cut back dry vegetation that can easily catch on fire.
  2. Remove flammable materials and/or trash that may be left out in the open.
  3. Move dumpsters and portable restrooms at least 10 feet away from buildings and roof overhangs.
  4. Review emergency procedures and have emergency supplies available as needed.
  5. Check that sprinkler systems and smoke alarms are operational.
  6. Post signs prohibiting the use of fireworks on school property.
  7. Inspect and remove roof debris and any flammable materials that may catch on fire.
  8. Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and that building alarm systems have been activated, if applicable.
  9. Check exterior lighting and replace any burned out bulbs. Keep building exterior and parking lots well-lit overnight.
  10. Check the exterior of buildings for any items or structures that may provide unwanted access to roof areas.
  11. Consider establishing an arson watch program or nightly security patrols.
School buildings are a valuable community resource, and by taking a few precautions, the risk of fires caused by fireworks can be significantly reduced.
