Eye Wash Stations and Emergency Showers

Eye wash stations and emergency showers can play an important and potentially lifesaving role during emergency situations in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, science classrooms, and maintenance areas. However, if they are not maintained correctly, there is a chance that they will not function properly when an emergency arises. We recommend that districts consider the following questions regarding any eye wash stations or emergency showers in your facilities.
  1. Are emergency showers available wherever there is potential for major portions of an employee's or student’s body to contact corrosives, strong irritants, or toxic chemicals?
  2. Is there an emergency eye wash station that can simultaneously irrigate both eyes available wherever there is potential for an employee's or student’s eyes to be exposed to corrosives, strong irritants, or toxic chemicals?
  3. Are emergency eye wash stations and showers functional and readily accessible?
  4. Are staff and students trained in the location and use of emergency washing facilities?
  5. Are the maintenance and testing protocols for emergency washing facilities included in your district’s Chemical Hygiene Plan?
  6. Is it clear who is responsible for performing regular testing of emergency washing facilities?
  7. Are plumbed emergency eye washes and hand-held drench hoses activated weekly to check the proper functioning of the valves, hardware, and availability of water? Is this weekly test documented?
  8. Are all plumbed emergency washing facilities inspected once a year to make sure they function correctly? Is this yearly inspection documented?
  9. Are all self-contained eye wash equipment and personal eye wash units inspected and maintained according to manufacturer instructions?
    • Is there a process for replacing self-contained eye wash stations before they pass their manufacturer expiration date?
