Opioid-Related Overdose Response

In the 2019 Legislative Session, the Washington State Legislature passed Substitute Senate Bill 5380. Governor Inslee signed the bill into law on May 13, 2019. The law requires school districts with two thousand students or more to obtain and maintain at least one set of opioid overdose reversal medication doses in each of its high schools.

The opioid epidemic is a public health crisis and access to opioid-related overdose reversal medication can be life-saving. Because of this, many school districts are expanding their board policies to include elementary and middle school buildings. Additionally, school districts with less than 2,000 students are opting to adopt board policies allowing them to make opioid reversal medication available in their schools, even while not legally required to do so.

School districts with a school that obtains, maintains, distributes, or administers opioid overdose reversal medication and/or school districts with two thousand or more students must adopt an opioid related board policy and follow all Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) opioid -related overdose policy guidelines and training requirements.
