Parking Lot Safety Tips

Areas that are often overlooked until an accident occurs are the school’s parking lots. Slips, trips, and falls can occur in these areas any time of year, but the winter months tend to have the highest frequency of these injuries because of ice and snow. During winter it may be dark when employees arrive and leave, reducing visibility and increasing risk.

Follow these guidelines to help keep you safe as you arrive at work and leave at the end of the day.

  • Park close to an entrance to avoid long walks to your building.
  • Park in well-lit areas, especially if you are one of the first to arrive each day or plan to work after others have left at night.
  • Be aware of icy conditions. Wear practical shoes and place your feet carefully. Take short steps and go slowly.
  • Look where you are walking.
  • When exiting/entering your vehicle, make sure you have firm footing with one or both feet before putting your entire weight down. Use the vehicle for support.
  • Avoid walking into the building with large or hard to carry items. Two trips may be better than one. Carry small loads to prevent your vision from being blocked. Ask for assistance or use a cart so you can use your hands and arms for balance.
  • Walk in designated walking paths. Do not take short cuts. Avoid walking across grassy or snowy areas that can be slippery.
  • Watch for loose gravel, trash, mulch from landscaping, mud, leaves, potholes, uneven surfaces, engine oil, and other hazardous conditions.
  • Be aware of curbs that can be buried under leaves or snow.
  • If possible, schedule your departure while it is still light outside.
  • Carry a cell phone and flashlight.
  • Report any unsafe or hazardous conditions.
