When we report online threats and safety concerns through official reporting platforms, we are helping to keep our entire community safe. Reporting allows school staff and law enforcement to review the information quickly and take appropriate action depending on the threat.

We all play a role in helping our community to know how to report a threat or a concern seen online. Help your community to know how to report online concerns in Washington state using these “Choose Care Over Clicks” tools. Customize the campaign with individual school district threat reporting information. For school districts without a threat reporting tool, use these helpful state resources to report instead of reposting.

Report to your school

Many school districts include a link to their safety reporting system on their website homepage. Report submissions will be sent to law enforcement and school leaders.

What Should Be Reported?

Report any online post, rumor, or message that includes:

  • Threats of violence toward a school, person or group of people

  • References to fights, weapons or harming others

  • Engaging in or encouraging Illegal or unsafe behavior

  • Child exploitation or abuse

  • Bullying or harassment

Don’t repost

Reposting threats and safety issues online can cause a ripple effect that may slow investigations and put people at risk. When threats are reposted, it becomes harder for law enforcement to trace the original source and take action.

Reposting threats can:

  • Delay a safe response

  • Make it harder for law enforcement to investigate the source of the post

  • Spread fear and misinformation
  • Give harmful content more attention
  • Impact minors whose photographs, names, or schools are included in the post
