Helping Meet Your School’s Safety Study Hall Requirements

Safety Study Hall (SSH) is a resource hub from the Washington State Department of Health designed to help schools educate their communities about critical youth health and safety topics, including substance use trends, overdose prevention and response, and secure storage of medications, firearms, and ammunition.

District Toolkit

This toolkit provides ready-to-use graphics, captions, and alternative text to help your district easily meet these requirements. Also included are samples of text you can include in print or e-newsletters. By using these materials, your school will fulfill its legal obligations while ensuring families have access to essential health and safety resources.

Households that locked both firearms and ammunition were 78% less likely to experience self-inflicted firearm injuries and had an 85% lower risk of accidental firearm injuries among children, compared to households that did not lock either (Grossman et al., 2005).

Requirements for schools

Washington state law (RCW 28A.320.292) requires all public school districts, charter schools, and state-tribal compact schools to share this information with students, families, and community members. Specifically, districts must:

  • Post on websites: Maintain a prominent link to SSH resources on district and individual school homepages

  • Share on social media or other e-communications: Distribute this information through social media accounts and other digital/non-digital communications at least twice per school year
