Christine Katon, Youth Workforce Program Manager at ESD 112, received the Sarah Anderson Memorial Outstanding Direct Support Professional Award at the 2025 Together We Can Conference, which took place at the Cowlitz County Expo Center.
This annual, free event, sponsored by Cowlitz County Health & Human Services (CCHHS), is intended for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and caregiving professionals. The conference included dynamic keynote speakers, a complimentary lunch, and a resource fair, providing a day of learning, connection, and access to community-based supports and services throughout Cowlitz County and neighboring areas.
The Sarah Anderson Memorial Award recognizes excellence in providing exceptional care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ensuring they lead fulfilling lives and are empowered to achieve their goals. In 2025, the award was renamed in memory of Sarah Anderson, an incredibly kind and compassionate Direct Support Professional who passed away earlier this year. Anderson was widely admired for her empathy, dedication, and ability to bring joy to those she served. The award now serves as a tribute to her legacy of care, connection, and community impact.
Katon was nominated by several students from the school districts she serves, an honor that highlights her direct, meaningful impact. Through the Youth Employment Services (YES) Program at ESD 112, she assists students with disabilities in gaining real-world experience, developing workplace skills, and building confidence in their abilities.
“Christine’s ‘yes’ mindset empowers students with disabilities to build confidence, gain experience, and achieve their goals,” CCHHS shared in its award announcement. “Her passion and belief in every student truly change lives.”
Jeanette Forman, Assistant Director for Special Education at ESD 112, praised Katon’s approach and the well-deserved recognition.
“Christine’s commitment to empowering students is truly inspiring,” said Forman. “She approaches her work with heart, humility, and a relentless belief in what’s possible for every student. This recognition is so well deserved, and we’re incredibly proud to have her on our team.”
Katon’s recognition at the Together We Can Conference not only celebrates her professional excellence but also reflects the powerful outcomes that arise when students are provided with belief, opportunity, and unwavering support.
