Alternative Routes to Certification

Alternative routes are designed for individuals with subject matter expertise and for individuals currently working in schools who would like to become teachers.  Alternative route programs are often shorter, less costly, and more convenient than traditional certification programs.

ESD 112, Battle Ground, Kelso, Vancouver, and Washougal school district, have partnered with City University to offer alternative routes through the Southwest Washington Alternative Routes Cooperative.  Visit the Professional Educator Standards Board’s (PESB) Alternative Routes site to learn about other Alternative Routes providers in the state.

The Southwest Washington Alternative Routes Cooperative received a grant to support 21 candidates in Routes 1, 2, and 4.  Route 1 candidates complete the program in two years, whereas candidates in Routes 2 & 4 finish in just one year.

Candidates supported via the grant awarded to the SW WA Alt Routes Coop have their City University tuition paid via a conditional loan scholarship issued by the Washington Student Achievement Council.  Note: The candidates for 2017-2018 have been selected from the Cooperative’s partner districts.

Interested individuals may participate in an Alternative Routes program outside of the Cooperative. Visit the PESB’s Alternative Routes site to learn more about approved program providers, the routes available, and entry requirements.

In the 2018-19 school year ESD 112 will be offering an Alternative Routes program called ESD-U.  For more information visit the program information page.
