Klickitat school district Teens Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse (TADAA!) hosted a senior citizen’s prom on February 11, 2017. The theme was “A Night Under the Stars,” and was dedicated to honoring those seniors who have given so much to Klickitat’s school and community. Roughly 50 seniors and other community members enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.

The TADAA! members planned and coordinated the prom, guided by Intervention Specialist Jeff Wolfanger and Community Prevention Project Coordinator Rita Pinchot. Dinner was provided by the PTO and other community volunteers. After suffering through a long and difficult winter in the rural community, those attending were thrilled by the event.

“It made us feel good to be able to give back to the community,” said TADAA! Club VP Anika Carlson. “Seniors told us they had a great time and asked if we could do it again next year!”

The Senior Citizen’s Prom was the first in a series of events for “Random Acts of Kindness Week,” honoring all age groups, school staff and community members. TADAA! members from both Klickitat and Lyle recorded radio spots and petitioned county commissioners to declare a county-wide “Random Acts of Kindness Week.”  The Commissioners graciously authored a proclamation and press release to that effect.

TADAA! will carry on promoting projects throughout the year within the framework of “Building Positive Connections”,  designed to foster positive community norms and connection to their community.  They will also continue to attend state and regional conferences with other like-minded teens to develop and fine tune their approaches to connecting youth to community building processes.
