Senator Craig Pridemore sends off new WRC volunteers
Senator Craig Pridemore visited the Washington Reading Corps orientation at ESD 112 on Friday to wish the volunteers good luck in their upcoming year of service.
Pridemore read the AmeriCorps pledge along with 20 volunteers at the end of ESD 112’s WRC training session. “When it comes to learning, there is only one thing that works for each and every kid and that is the attention of a committed adult,” said Senator Pridemore. “Realize that what you’re doing with each young person will impact the rest of their lives.”
This year, over 300 AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers help over 800 kids learn the value of literacy across Washington State. Collectively, the volunteers will spend over 41,000 hours helping students, families and communities. Some volunteers come to the program immediately after graduating from high school, while others wait until they retire to participate.
The Washington Reading Corps is a statewide initiative that helps K-6 students improve their reading abilities through research-based tutoring and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, National Service Programs, businesses and state partners.
