Each year during the second week of May, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) collaborates with individuals, communities, and organizations to observe National Prevention Week. This annual campaign emphasizes the importance of prevention in fostering mental health and decreasing substance use and misuse across the country.
As part of this year’s observance, Jodi Fowler, the Student Assistance Professional at Monticello Middle School in Longview, organized a student poster contest with support from the EPIC Coalition. Although initial participation was limited despite the offer of prizes, Fowler quickly identified a barrier: many students lacked access to art supplies. Once she provided poster boards and other materials, student engagement increased significantly.
“Jodi’s thoughtful approach to removing barriers and encouraging creative expression empowered students to take an active role in prevention,” said Sarah Hancock, Community Prevention Project Coordinator at ESD 112. “This contest helped foster a sense of ownership and pride in their voices, which is exactly what prevention work is all about.”
EPIC Coalition members voted on the entries and sponsored prizes for the top three posters, all of which promote substance use prevention and mental health awareness.
Congratulations to the winners:
- 1st place: Jacqueline Bautista, 6th grade
- 2nd place: Allyson Gregg, 8th grade
- 3rd place: Angela Yeam, 7th grade
Congratulations to all participants, and a heartfelt thank-you to Jodi Fowler for her commitment to student wellness and engagement.
