About

Professional Development and Continuing Education

ESD 112 offers professional development and continuing education classes for the PreK–Third Grade Community of professionals working with children and families. Topics address WA State Core Competencies for Early Learning Professionals and School Age Professionals. Classes are instructed by experts in the field who are Washington State approved trainers. Courses include the following topics:

Highly Effective Learning Environments

Learn how effective learning environments can become tools for learning. Look at classroom designs and the use of learning centers help facilitate quality interactions. Trainers with expertise in the Environmental Rating Scales can support programs with meeting standards.

Leadership and Staff Support

Early childhood administrators and leaders have opportunities to connect and grow professionally. Topics include establishing, implementing, and evaluating program practices. Learn how to serve children and families in a professional manner and become a leader for early care and education.

Quality Teacher-Child Interactions

Learn how teachers can facilitate reflective thinking through use of effective questions and conversations. Understand what social emotional development is and how behaviors are affected by communication strategies and interactions. Trainers with expertise in the CLASS tool can support programs with meeting standards.

Teaching STEM, Math, and Science

Children who start kindergarten at grade level are on path for success throughout the school years. The first five years is an unmatched time of cognitive preparation for school. Learn how fun, everyday experiences help children prepare for kindergarten with a focus on STEM, science, and math.

Curriculum and Routines: How to Support Learning

Learn how to plan and provide high quality curriculum for birth to preschool classrooms. Utilizing ongoing observation-based assessments help teachers provide learning experiences that match individual child needs, abilities, and interests.

Child Development

We know that a strong understanding of child development supports best practices in high quality early childcare programs. Trainers will review our routines, environments, and curriculum planning through the lens of evidence based and developmentally appropriate practice.

Family Engagement

Learn how to develop strong relationships with families participating in your programs. Understanding the foundation of family support principles is key to building effective and meaningful family engagement strategies.

WaKIDS and Full Day Kindergarten

The Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a transition process that helps to ensure a successful start to the K-12 experience and connect the key adults in a child’s life. Trainers with expertise in the WaKIDS system and full day kindergarten classrooms can support Preschool and Kindergarten teachers with implementing best practices.

1-15 people: $100 per hour 1-15 people: $125 per hour
16-30 people: $125 per hour 16-30 people: $150 per hour
31-45 people: $150 per hour 31-45 people: $175 per hour
46-60 people: $200 per hour 46-60 people: $250 per hour
61+ people: $250 per hour 61+ people: $325 per hour

*Prices listed are for single trainer and do not include travel expenses. Rates are subject to change if travel expenses are required or if course requires multiple trainers.

Family Child Care

Providers may coordinate a group to fund the cost of training. ESD can provide space and materials for training. Trainings can be held on Saturdays or in the evening during non-business hours.

Child Care and Preschool Centers

Training can be provided at your site and held during in-service days, Saturdays, or in the evenings.

Trainers

About Your Trainers

Tracy Collins
Tracy Collins, Ed.D, comes to the state of Washington with a love of working with young children, their families, and early learning environments. Tracy has over 35 years’ experience working in early childhood education and has worked in a wide variety of settings. After earning advanced degrees in Early Childhood Education/Child Development and Human Development and Psychology, Tracy taught and conducted research in ECE college programs in Massachusetts, Texas, and Maine. After returning to the Pacific Northwest in 2014, Tracy joined ESD 112 as an Early Learning Advanced Trainer. In addition to her love of young children, Tracy is an avid fan of dogs, volunteers in the early childhood program at Oregon Museum of Science (OMSI) as well as participating in various early learning research projects in the Portland/Vancouver area.
Jesi Sucku
Jesi Sucku is an Early Learning Advanced Training Specialist with a passion for play-based learning, social-emotional development, and supporting neurodiverse students and adults. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where she grew up, and a master’s in Early Childhood and Inclusive Education from Portland State University (though she prefers to call it her Master’s in Play!).

With over 15 years of experience, Jesi has worked in infant and toddler classrooms and coached over 100 early educators as an Early Achievers coach in Southwest Washington. She thrives on helping others create meaningful, inclusive, and flexible, research-backed learning experiences. A particular fan of the Reggio Emilia and Montessori philosophies—and a Head Start and Montessori kid herself—she’s a lifelong learner, always on the hunt for the latest best practices (and possibly a fresh iced oat milk matcha).

Outside of work, Jesi keeps busy in the local theatre scene, both behind the scenes and on stage. She lives in Vancouver, Washington, with her husband, one child, two dogs, and occasionally her mom—who all keep life entertaining in their own ways.

Yisbely Torres
Yisbely Torres (She/Her) is a Bilingual Advanced Early Learning Trainer at ESD 112. She graduated with a BS degree in Elementary Education and Psychology. Currently, she is pursuing her MA in Education Leadership and Policy with a concentration in Urban Education at The University of Maryland. Her previous work and education have focused on constructivist approaches to teaching and learning, play-based learning, and environmental and cultural influences on the performance of children in the classroom. She strives to promote inclusive and welcoming methods in education as well as in her trainings. Yisbely has two cats and enjoys camping and hiking.

STARS

All trainers are STARS approved.

All classes $5 per STARS hour unless otherwise noted.

STARS credits will only be given for fully completing a class. MERIT reporting is completed within 30 days of a class and STARS credit will be reflected in that time. In order to receive STARS credit for a class, you will need to sign-in and provide a STARS ID number on the sign-in sheet. Classes are subject to change. Clock hours available.
