We would like to encourage our school districts to take steps to identify the buildings in their school district that are no longer being used or experiencing infrequent occupancy due to the ongoing health crisis. Unoccupied buildings are at higher risk of losses due to fire, water, or vandalism.

  • Ensure that doors and windows are secured.
  • If the building is equipped with an alarm, make sure to set when the building is unoccupied.
  • Plan for and schedule fire extinguisher, fire alarm and fire sprinkler testing, inspection and maintenance.
  • Secure roof hatches and rooftop equipment doors and access panels.
  • If your playgrounds and fields are open to the public, please ensure that regular maintenance is still being performed during closures. If you are unable to maintain maintenance, the district may want to consider closing these areas from public use.
  • Store high value equipment in secure rooms, preferably rooms without windows.
  • Keep window coverings closed to hide room contents.
  • Turn off all gas and electric appliances that will not be used; unplug non-essential electrical equipment. Close gas valves that are not used during the summer.
  • When possible, restrict access to parking lots when not in use. Make sure driveway gates and especially cables are marked and easily visible.
  • Keep the exterior of your buildings free of combustible materials and overgrown or dry foliage. Make sure dumpsters are located away from the building.
  • Check all lighting inside and outside. Replace burned out bulbs as needed.
  • Inspect exterior doors, fences and gates for damage and faulty hardware. Make repairs immediately.

In addition many district vehicles are not currently in use which makes them attractive for theft or vandalism. We have put together some tips to prevent vehicle theft and break-ins.

  • Keep vehicles locked and windows closed when parked.
  • Keep vehicle keys stored in locked boxes. Never leave keys in or hidden on the vehicle.
  • Request that valuables, tools, loose change, etc. are not kept in unattended vehicles. If unavoidable, ask that the items are stored out of line of site.
  • Consider installing anti-theft devices such as a steering wheel lock.
  • If gas theft is an issue, consider installing locking gas caps.
  • Restrict access to parking lots and garages. When possible, securely fence your transportation area.
  • Keep parking lot gates locked during evenings and weekends, or when the facility is not in use.
  • Keep parking lots well-lit. Consider parking district vehicles in well-lit areas near the facility.
  • Consider adding security cameras to the parking area. Prominently post signs that announce the area is under surveillance. Park district vehicles within the scope of the cameras.
  • Cut back foliage that could provide camouflage or hiding places.
  • Work with local law enforcement. Request frequent surveillance of facilities. Report all incidents to law enforcement immediately.
