Aligning regional support to strengthen teaching and learning in mathematics and beyond

About

About the Regional Improvement Initiative

The Regional Improvement Initiative brings educators, school and district leaders, and regional partners together to strengthen teaching and learning across our region. This multi-year effort begins with mathematics, with a focus on building shared instructional practices, stronger leadership and systems that support continuous improvement.

The initiative focuses on three key groups:

  • 1

Students: Create learning experiences that emphasize sensemaking and help students develop confidence in their abilities.

  • 2

Teachers: Build a shared vision and sustained support for ambitious, equitable instructional practices.

  • 3

Leaders: Strengthen the systems and leadership practices needed to create coherence, sustain improvement and build collective capacity.

Together, we are creating a learning community where:

  • Every student believes they can learn.
  • Every educator believes in and nurtures every learner’s brilliance.
  • Every leader builds systems that sustain high-quality instruction over time.
  • Every district contributes to and benefits from the region’s collective knowledge.

In its first year, the initiative is focused on mathematics, bringing educators, school and district leaders, and regional partners together around a shared vision and approach to improving mathematics.

Mathematics

Mathematics Focus

Mathematics is the Regional Improvement Initiative’s first priority area. Across our region, we lack a shared vision and coherent system for high-quality mathematics teaching and learning. As a result, beliefs, instructional practices, leadership actions, and improvement efforts can vary widely, contributing to fragmented implementation and inequitable student experiences.

Our goal is not simply to improve achievement. We are working toward lasting change in how students experience mathematics, how educators learn and improve together, and how schools and districts build systems that support continuous improvement.

We want every student to experience mathematics as a place of curiosity, challenge, belonging, and possibility. Through collective leadership and continuous learning, we are creating the conditions for students to build confidence, reason deeply, and see themselves as capable mathematicians.

Our Strategic Goals

  • Build leadership capacity: Develop the capacity of leaders throughout the system to advance a shared vision for mathematics teaching and learning through ongoing improvement cycles.

  • Align regional supports: Strengthen and align regional supports for sustained improvement in mathematics and future priority areas, with an emphasis on connecting and integrating initiatives.

  • Support deep implementation: Help districts move beyond awareness and mechanical use toward fluency, deeper implementation, and sustained change, while monitoring progress along the way.
