This story comes from Early Head Start parent Etelvina Cortez, who discovered that the program would support not only her son’s development, but her own journey toward greater confidence, independence and new possibilities.

My name is Etelvina, this is my son Ryan, and I would like to share a little about my experience with the Early Head Start program and everything it has meant to my family.

When I decided to enroll in the program, my main reason was that I wanted support with my son Ryan’s development. As a mom, we always want the best for our children, and I wanted to learn how I could help him grow, learn, and develop in the best way possible. I was also told about all the resources the program offered to families.

At that time, my situation was very different. I did not know how to drive and I did not leave my home very often, so the home visits were a great help to me. Having someone come to my home, teach me, and answer my questions made a big difference.

Later, Diana told me about the transportation the program offers twice a month to attend Play Day. That was something very special for us. Ryan really enjoys riding the bus. For him, it is a whole adventure. Thanks to that transportation, we were able to attend activities where he could spend time with other children and learn to socialize.

I also want to mention our bus driver. Even though she does not speak Spanish, she has always found a way to communicate with us. She always welcomes us with a smile and makes us feel welcome. Those small details mean a lot to a family.

Through playgroup days, I have also met many people. Before, I hardly knew anyone. Now I have friendships with other moms who also have young children. We have shared experiences and advice, and we support one another. That has been very special to me.

I am also very thankful for all the resources Diana has shared with me during this time. She has not only focused on Ryan, but has also thought about me and my personal growth.

For example, she encouraged me to learn how to drive. She supported me throughout that process until I was able to pass my test and get my driver’s license. That changed my life because now I have more independence and I can take my sone where he needs to go.

She also gave me information about English classes, computer classes, and the GED program. I always tried to take advantage of those opportunities because I knew they could help me build a better future.

Before, I did not know how to use a computer, and now I know the basics. Before, I understood very little English, and now I can understand much more and I know many words.

All of this has given me more confidence in myself. Because of all this growth, I have also been able to start my own small business as a nutrition and supplement advisor. I feel very proud because I have learned that it is never too late to keep growing and reach new goals.

Something else I want to recognize is that Diana is always there to support us. She always answers the phone when I have a question, when I need help making an appointment, when I have an emergency, or simply when I need guidance.

Knowing that I have that support gives me a lot of peace of mind. And of course, Ryan has also developed a very special relationship with her. He knows very well that Thursdays are the days Diana comes to visit us.

From early in the day, he waits excitedly for her at the window. He knows Diana drives a red Jeep, and he is always watching for her to arrive. The first thing he wants to know is what games or activities she will bring that day for them to play together. As a mom, that makes me very happy because I know Ryan enjoys the visits and, at the same time, he is learning while he plays.

Today I can say that Early Head Start has benefited our family in many ways. It has not only supported my son’s development, but it has also helped me grow as a person, as a mom, and as a woman.

It has given us tools, opportunities, friendships, confidence, and resources that have improved our quality of life.

I want to thank the entire Early Head Start team for the work they do every day. Thank you for believing in families, for listening to us, for supporting us, and for walking alongside us.

Buenos días a todos.

Mi nombre es Etelvina, él es mi hijo Ryan, y quiero compartir un poquito de mi experiencia con el programa de Early Head Start y todo lo que ha significado para mi familia.

Cuando decidí inscribirme en el programa, mi principal razón fue porque quería apoyo para el desarrollo de mi hijo Ryan. Como mamá, siempre queremos lo mejor para nuestros hijos, y yo quería aprender cómo ayudarlo a crecer, aprender y desarrollarse de la mejor manera posible. También me hablaron de todos los recursos que el programa ofrecía para las familias.

En ese tiempo mi situación era muy diferente. Yo no sabía manejar y casi no salía de mi casa, así que las visitas en el hogar fueron una gran ayuda para mí. Tener a alguien que viniera a mi casa, me enseñara y respondiera mis preguntas hizo una gran diferencia.

Después, Diana me habló del transporte que ofrece el programa dos veces al mes para asistir al Día de Juego. Eso fue algo muy especial para nosotros. Ryan disfruta muchísimo subirse al autobús. Para él es toda una aventura. Además, gracias a ese transporte pudimos asistir a muchas actividades donde él pudo convivir con otros niños y aprender a socializar.

Quiero mencionar también a la conductora del autobús. Aunque ella no habla español, siempre ha buscado la manera de comunicarse con nosotros. Siempre nos recibe con una sonrisa y nos hace sentir bienvenidos. Ese tipo de detalles significan mucho para una familia.

Gracias a los Días de Juego también conocí a muchas personas. Antes casi no conocía a nadie. Ahora tengo amistades con otras mamás que también tienen niños pequeños. Hemos compartido experiencias, consejos y nos apoyamos unas a otras. Eso ha sido muy bonito para mí.

Algo que también agradezco mucho son todos los recursos que Diana me ha compartido durante este tiempo. Ella no solo se ha enfocado en Ryan, también ha pensado en mí y en mi crecimiento personal.

Por ejemplo, me animó a aprender a manejar. Me apoyó durante todo ese proceso hasta que pude pasar mi examen y obtener mi licencia de conducir. Eso cambió mi vida porque ahora tengo más independencia y puedo llevar a mi hijo a donde necesita ir.

También me dio información sobre clases de inglés, computación y el programa para obtener el GED. Yo siempre traté de aprovechar esas oportunidades porque sabía que eran para mejorar mi futuro.

Antes no sabía usar una computadora y ahora ya sé hacer lo básico. Antes casi no entendía inglés y ahora puedo comprender mucho más y conozco muchas palabras.

Todo eso me ha dado más confianza en mí misma. Además, gracias a todo ese crecimiento, ahora también he podido comenzar mi propio emprendimiento como asesora de nutrición y suplementos. Me siento muy orgullosa porque he aprendido que nunca es tarde para seguir creciendo y alcanzar nuevas metas.

Algo que quiero reconocer es que Diana siempre está para apoyarnos. Siempre contesta el teléfono cuando tengo una duda, cuando necesito ayuda para hacer una cita, cuando tengo alguna emergencia o simplemente cuando necesito orientación.

Saber que cuento con ese apoyo me da mucha tranquilidad. Y por supuesto, Ryan también ha creado una relación muy especial con ella. Él sabe perfectamente que los jueves son los días en que Diana viene a visitarnos.

Desde temprano la espera muy emocionado en la ventana. Él sabe que Diana maneja un Jeep rojo y siempre está pendiente de cuándo va a llegar. Lo primero que quiere saber es qué juegos o actividades traerá ese día para jugar juntos. Como mamá, eso me llena de felicidad porque sé que Ryan disfruta las visitas y al mismo tiempo está aprendiendo mientras juega.

Hoy puedo decir que Early Head Start ha beneficiado a nuestra familia de muchas maneras. No solo ha apoyado el desarrollo de mi hijo, también me ha ayudado a crecer como persona, como mamá y como mujer.

Nos ha dado herramientas, oportunidades, amistades, confianza y recursos que han mejorado nuestra calidad de vida.
