In front of a school full of students and staff, Kelso High School Principal John Gummel was awarded the 2018 High School Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP). Gummel’s devotion to student achievement, making the difficult but highly beneficial switch to a trimester system, and commitment to a 100% graduation rate were cited as key reasons for the award.

“We are so proud of John and the school he represents,” said Kelso Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich.

Gummel is the first principal in Cowlitz County to win the award.
